Overview

The Belleville Mural Project was a celebration of community, exploration, and the small town charm of Belleville, Illinois. Collaborating with another talented graphic designer (Celine Everson), we set out to design and paint a large-scale mural that would serve as a vibrant meet-up spot for cyclists and a visual ode to the spirit of Belleville.

Conceptualization

In the initial stages, Celine and I engaged in intensive brainstorming sessions, drawing inspiration from the local biking culture, landmarks, and the dynamic energy of Belleville. We envisioned a mural that would not only serve as a functional meeting point for group cyclists but also encapsulate the essence of exploration and community.

Design Development

Dividing responsibilities based on our strengths, we crafted a design that seamlessly merged our individual styles and captured the city's unique charm. The mural features bicycles and well-known Belleville iconography, outdoor activities and the encouraging message to “Explore Belleville.” The design adorns a vast parking lot close to an entrance of winding bike trails, and is aimed to be a colorful meet-up spot for group bike rides.

Materials & Techniques

Choosing durable and weather-resistant paints, we prepared for the challenges of an outdoor mural. To maximize longevity, we incorporated UV-resistant primers and sealants to protect against fading. Embracing a combination of hand-made brushwork and graphic elements, we aimed to infuse the mural with a sense of dynamic movement and energy.

Execution

With the design finalized and Belleville Mural Project board members’ input incorporated, we embarked on the mural painting process. Scaling ladders and armed with brushes and cans of paint, we brought our vision to life on the chosen wall (the Belleville Parks & Recreation building). Working collaboratively, we navigated the challenges of scale, weather, and logistics to ensure a seamless and vibrant execution.

Unveiling & Celebration

The completion of the mural was celebrated with a community event that coincided with a nighttime arts festival in Downtown Belleville. The unveiling ceremony included speeches, live music, and a collective appreciation of the newly adorned wall.

Legacy & Impact

The Belleville Mural Project collaboration left a lasting legacy as a visual testament to community, exploration, and the joy of cycling. Beyond being a meeting spot, the mural became a source of local pride and an embodiment of Belleville's spirit. The collaboration not only transformed a wall but also strengthened the sense of connection and identity within the community.
